Omschrijving:
Denkend aan weleer ('Old Thought')
Herfst, die naam voor vallende klimop en liefdevolle theetijd,
was ooit voor mij de gedachte aan de High Cotswold’s middaglucht,
Aan de aarde die geurt, het verkleurend bramenblad, onder zeilende wolken,
Vermengd met de liefde voor het lichaam en het reizen door het wuivend grasland.
O heerlijk klimmen, het vastgrijpen aan de rand, o snelle pas,
Gelijk het beukenbos, genietend van het buiten adem zijn,
De loftrompet gestoken over de nog onbekende Crickley cliffs, laat muziek gloeien in mijn gedachten.
Witte Cotswold, wijnrode bossen en kapotgeslagen, vochtig herfstblad.
Ivor Gurney
‘Old Thought’ is niet alleen een gedicht over het wandelen in de Engelse landstreek de Cotswold, maar ook een gedicht over veel meer dan dat alleen. Het is een passende introductie van de dichter en componist Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937) uit Gloucestershire, misschien het meest bekend als musicus en oorlogsdichter uit de 1e Wereldoorlog.
Gurney’s gedichten getuigen van zijn liefde voor het landschap van Gloucestershire met dezelfde niet-sentimentele kracht waarmee hij verslag deed van de harde werkelijkheid van de loopgravenoorlog, en verklaren zijn geleidelijk afglijden in waanzin.
In 2010 volgde ik het spoor van Ivor Gurney op de voormalige slagvelden rond het Vlaamse Ieper, Nu, in 2017, zal ik in zijn voetsporen treden tijdens mijn bezoek aan zijn geliefde Gloucestershire. In de Cotswold zal ik Crickley Hill beklimmen, Gurney’s verheven plek waar hij zich alleen kon terugtrekken met altijd muziek en poëzie in zijn gedachten. Voor mij betekent dit het aanschouwen van het wisselende herfstlandschap en het ondergaan van de grote rijkdom aan herinneringen aan Ivor Gurney. Met altijd het weidse uitzicht over Gurney’s Gloucestershire beneden me…

Omschrijving:
Denkend aan weleer ('Old Thought')
Herfst, die naam voor vallende klimop en liefdevolle theetijd,
was ooit voor mij de gedachte aan de High Cotswold’s middaglucht,
Aan de aarde die geurt, het verkleurend bramenblad, onder zeilende wolken,
Vermengd met de liefde voor het lichaam en het reizen door het wuivend grasland.
O heerlijk klimmen, het vastgrijpen aan de rand, o snelle pas,
Gelijk het beukenbos, genietend van het buiten adem zijn,
De loftrompet gestoken over de nog onbekende Crickley cliffs, laat muziek gloeien in mijn gedachten.
Witte Cotswold, wijnrode bossen en kapotgeslagen, vochtig herfstblad.
Ivor Gurney
‘Old Thought’ is niet alleen een gedicht over het wandelen in de Engelse landstreek de Cotswold, maar ook een gedicht over veel meer dan dat alleen. Het is een passende introductie van de dichter en componist Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937) uit Gloucestershire, misschien het meest bekend als musicus en oorlogsdichter uit de 1e Wereldoorlog.
Gurney’s gedichten getuigen van zijn liefde voor het landschap van Gloucestershire met dezelfde niet-sentimentele kracht waarmee hij verslag deed van de harde werkelijkheid van de loopgravenoorlog, en verklaren zijn geleidelijk afglijden in waanzin.
In 2010 volgde ik het spoor van Ivor Gurney op de voormalige slagvelden rond het Vlaamse Ieper, Nu, in 2017, zal ik in zijn voetsporen treden tijdens mijn bezoek aan zijn geliefde Gloucestershire. In de Cotswold zal ik Crickley Hill beklimmen, Gurney’s verheven plek waar hij zich alleen kon terugtrekken met altijd muziek en poëzie in zijn gedachten. Voor mij betekent dit het aanschouwen van het wisselende herfstlandschap en het ondergaan van de grote rijkdom aan herinneringen aan Ivor Gurney. Met altijd het weidse uitzicht over Gurney’s Gloucestershire beneden me…

Omschrijving:
Denkend aan weleer ('Old Thought')
Herfst, die naam voor vallende klimop en liefdevolle theetijd,
was ooit voor mij de gedachte aan de High Cotswold’s middaglucht,
Aan de aarde die geurt, het verkleurend bramenblad, onder zeilende wolken,
Vermengd met de liefde voor het lichaam en het reizen door het wuivend grasland.
O heerlijk klimmen, het vastgrijpen aan de rand, o snelle pas,
Gelijk het beukenbos, genietend van het buiten adem zijn,
De loftrompet gestoken over de nog onbekende Crickley cliffs, laat muziek gloeien in mijn gedachten.
Witte Cotswold, wijnrode bossen en kapotgeslagen, vochtig herfstblad.
Ivor Gurney
‘Old Thought’ is niet alleen een gedicht over het wandelen in de Engelse landstreek de Cotswold, maar ook een gedicht over veel meer dan dat alleen. Het is een passende introductie van de dichter en componist Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937) uit Gloucestershire, misschien het meest bekend als musicus en oorlogsdichter uit de 1e Wereldoorlog.
Gurney’s gedichten getuigen van zijn liefde voor het landschap van Gloucestershire met dezelfde niet-sentimentele kracht waarmee hij verslag deed van de harde werkelijkheid van de loopgravenoorlog, en verklaren zijn geleidelijk afglijden in waanzin.
In 2010 volgde ik het spoor van Ivor Gurney op de voormalige slagvelden rond het Vlaamse Ieper, Nu, in 2017, zal ik in zijn voetsporen treden tijdens mijn bezoek aan zijn geliefde Gloucestershire. In de Cotswold zal ik Crickley Hill beklimmen, Gurney’s verheven plek waar hij zich alleen kon terugtrekken met altijd muziek en poëzie in zijn gedachten. Voor mij betekent dit het aanschouwen van het wisselende herfstlandschap en het ondergaan van de grote rijkdom aan herinneringen aan Ivor Gurney. Met altijd het weidse uitzicht over Gurney’s Gloucestershire beneden me…

Naar Ivor Gurney's Gloucestershire
Omschrijving:
Denkend aan weleer ('Old Thought')
Herfst, die naam voor vallende klimop en liefdevolle theetijd,
was ooit voor mij de gedachte aan de High Cotswold’s middaglucht,
Aan de aarde die geurt, het verkleurend bramenblad, onder zeilende wolken,
Vermengd met de liefde voor het lichaam en het reizen door het wuivend grasland.
O heerlijk klimmen, het vastgrijpen aan de rand, o snelle pas,
Gelijk het beukenbos, genietend van het buiten adem zijn,
De loftrompet gestoken over de nog onbekende Crickley cliffs, laat muziek gloeien in mijn gedachten.
Witte Cotswold, wijnrode bossen en kapotgeslagen, vochtig herfstblad.
Ivor Gurney
‘Old Thought’ is niet alleen een gedicht over het wandelen in de Engelse landstreek de Cotswold, maar ook een gedicht over veel meer dan dat alleen. Het is een passende introductie van de dichter en componist Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937) uit Gloucestershire, misschien het meest bekend als musicus en oorlogsdichter uit de 1e Wereldoorlog.
Gurney’s gedichten getuigen van zijn liefde voor het landschap van Gloucestershire met dezelfde niet-sentimentele kracht waarmee hij verslag deed van de harde werkelijkheid van de loopgravenoorlog, en verklaren zijn geleidelijk afglijden in waanzin.
In 2010 volgde ik het spoor van Ivor Gurney op de voormalige slagvelden rond het Vlaamse Ieper, Nu, in 2017, zal ik in zijn voetsporen treden tijdens mijn bezoek aan zijn geliefde Gloucestershire. In de Cotswold zal ik Crickley Hill beklimmen, Gurney’s verheven plek waar hij zich alleen kon terugtrekken met altijd muziek en poëzie in zijn gedachten. Voor mij betekent dit het aanschouwen van het wisselende herfstlandschap en het ondergaan van de grote rijkdom aan herinneringen aan Ivor Gurney. Met altijd het weidse uitzicht over Gurney’s Gloucestershire beneden me…

Herfst, die naam voor vallende klimop en liefdevolle theetijd,
was ooit voor mij de gedachte aan de High Cotswold’s middaglucht,
Aan de aarde die geurt, het verkleurend bramenblad, onder zeilende wolken,
Vermengd met de liefde voor het lichaam en het reizen door het wuivend grasland.
O heerlijk klimmen, het vastgrijpen aan de rand, o snelle pas,
Gelijk het beukenbos, genietend van het buiten adem zijn,
De loftrompet gestoken over de nog onbekende Crickley cliffs, laat muziek gloeien in mijn gedachten.
Witte Cotswold, wijnrode bossen en kapotgeslagen, vochtig herfstblad.
Ivor Gurney
‘Old Thought’ is niet alleen een gedicht over het wandelen in de Engelse landstreek de Cotswold, maar ook een gedicht over veel meer dan dat alleen. Het is een passende introductie van de dichter en componist Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937) uit Gloucestershire, misschien het meest bekend als musicus en oorlogsdichter uit de 1e Wereldoorlog.
Gurney’s gedichten getuigen van zijn liefde voor het landschap van Gloucestershire met dezelfde niet-sentimentele kracht waarmee hij verslag deed van de harde werkelijkheid van de loopgravenoorlog, en verklaren zijn geleidelijk afglijden in waanzin.
In 2010 volgde ik het spoor van Ivor Gurney op de voormalige slagvelden rond het Vlaamse Ieper, Nu, in 2017, zal ik in zijn voetsporen treden tijdens mijn bezoek aan zijn geliefde Gloucestershire. In de Cotswold zal ik Crickley Hill beklimmen, Gurney’s verheven plek waar hij zich alleen kon terugtrekken met altijd muziek en poëzie in zijn gedachten. Voor mij betekent dit het aanschouwen van het wisselende herfstlandschap en het ondergaan van de grote rijkdom aan herinneringen aan Ivor Gurney.
